This is another in our Student Spotlight series, where our students tell their stories in their own words.

I am originally from Wadi Dawan, Hadhramout, Yemen, but born and raised in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I graduated with dual master’s degrees from the University of Arizona: an M.Arch in Architecture and an MS.Arch in Architecture, Design, and Energy Conservation. Prior to that, I obtained a Bachelor of Architecture B.Arch. in Architectural and Building Sciences from King Saud University. I am currently a Design Lead at Nelsen Partners in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Growing up in Riyadh, a city experiencing rapid urban transformation, I was constantly surrounded by awe-inspiring architectural feats. The visionary creations of renowned architects like Zaha Hadid and Norman Foster, with their fluid forms and innovative concepts, captivated my imagination. From an early age, my father instilled the importance of lifelong learning, and I'm gratified to see that this emphasis has resonated with most of my siblings. Of my five siblings, my older brother shares my passion for architecture, two others are accomplished dentists, and my sister has successfully pursued a career in business management. As the youngest in our family, I consider myself fortunate to have grown up in an environment that prioritized education. The most significant influence on my architectural aspirations honestly stemmed from my older brother; witnessing his passion for architecture, from observing his intricate drawings and meticulously crafted physical models as a child, ignited a spark within me. He fostered my interest by engaging me in insightful discussions about his university projects, never once condescending to my age. He presented complex architectural concepts in a way that was both accessible and inspiring, encouraging me to think critically about form, function, and the relationship between buildings and their surroundings. This early exposure to the world of architecture, coupled with the awe-inspiring urban landscape of Riyadh, instilled in me a profound appreciation for the transformative power of design and ignited a deep-seated desire to contribute to shaping the built environment.
My journey with the Hadhramout Foundation began amidst the rigorous academic landscape of Saudi Arabia, where securing admission to a prestigious university can be particularly challenging for foreign students. With the unwavering support of my family, I dedicated myself to academic excellence, achieving a high GPA in high school and high scores on the Qodrat and Tahsili examinations. This dedication culminated in my acceptance of a scholarship by the Hadhramout Foundation in King Saud University, a renowned institution of higher learning. Throughout my undergraduate studies, I consistently strived for academic distinction, graduating with honors and achieving first in my class. My commitment was further evident by receiving numerous accolades, including Dean's Awards, recognition for the Best Design in Architecture, and the esteemed title of “Ideal Student of the College of Architecture and Planning”.
Architecture, in my view, is the very language of civilization, a powerful medium that shapes not only the physical environment but also the human experience. Recognizing this profound impact, I envision my education as a catalyst for positive change within Yemen, and so my future plans are deeply intertwined with the revitalization and reconstruction of my homeland. I aspire to contribute to the rebuilding efforts, focusing on creating sustainable and resilient communities. This involves more than simply erecting structures; it necessitates a holistic approach that considers social, economic, and environmental factors.
I aim to leverage my architectural expertise to design buildings that not only provide shelter but also foster a sense of community, promote economic growth, and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Yemen. By integrating traditional Yemeni architectural principles with contemporary design methodologies, we can create spaces that are both beautiful and functional, and also that reflect the unique identity of the Yemeni people while addressing the pressing challenges of the 21st century. I personally believe that architecture has the power to heal, inspire, and transform. Through thoughtful and responsible design, we can contribute to the rebuilding of a stronger, more prosperous, and more resilient Yemen – a nation that thrives not just in spite of its challenges, but because of its resilience and the ingenuity of its people.
While my journey has not been without its challenges, the pursuit of excellence has always been a driving force. Navigating the competitive academic landscape in Saudi Arabia, particularly as a foreign student, demanded unwavering dedication and perseverance. However, the support of my family and the unwavering belief in my abilities from the Hadhramout Foundation, particularly Sheikh Abdullah Bugshan, provided me with the necessary encouragement to overcome obstacles and strive for academic distinction. These experiences have instilled in me a strong work ethic and a deep-seated understanding of the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. I believe that these qualities, coupled with my passion for design and my commitment to creating sustainable and meaningful built environments, will enable me to make a significant contribution to the rebuilding of Yemen, and to leave a lasting positive impact on the world.
In five years, I envision myself at the forefront of innovative and human-centered design, contributing to projects that not only meet aesthetic and functional demands but also prioritize the well-being of their occupants and the surrounding environment. I hope to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and push the boundaries of creative expression while exploring novel approaches to sustainable building practices and the integration of renewable energy sources. Looking even further ahead, in ten years, I see myself as a leading voice in the field of architecture, known for my unique design philosophy that emphasizes the interplay of form, function, and human experience. I envision a practice that champions sustainable and regenerative design, creating spaces that are not only beautiful and inspiring but also contribute to a healthier and more equitable world.
I believe that architecture has the power to transform not only the physical landscape but also the human spirit. By embracing creativity, prioritizing sustainability, and focusing on the human dimension of design, I aim to contribute to a future where buildings are not merely structures, but rather living expressions of our collective aspirations and our commitment to a more sustainable and harmonious future.
I am deeply grateful to the Hadhramout Foundation for this opportunity to share my journey and aspirations. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in my academic journey, and I am committed to honoring their trust by striving for excellence in all my endeavors. I look forward to contributing meaningfully to the field of architecture and leaving a lasting positive impact on the world.
